FAQs  (Frequently Asked Questions)

When can I register?  Registration is now scheduled 2 times per school year. Classes start in September and continue through June.  If you miss Open Registration, call (302) 424-2101 ext. 1.  Someone will call you back and place you on the waiting list and let you know when the next registration is.
Who can take these classes?  Our classes are for adults who live or work in Delaware.  Children 16 and older who are not enrolled in another school can also attend.  All students must complete the registration process before attending classes.
Do you offer childcare?  No, unfortunately, we do not.  Children are not allowed in classes, or on school property while you take class.
What do I need to bring?  To register, please bring your Social Security Number or ITIN.  For class, you need a notebook and something to write with.
How many levels do you have?  At the moment we have 4 different classes in our evening program (Literacy 0-1, Beginner 2-3, Intermediate 4-5, and Advanced 6) and 2 different classes in the morning program (Lit/Beg 0-3 and Int/Adv 4-6).
What if I cannot attend class at the times or days offered?  There are other free programs in the area (Red Clay School District, Literacy Delaware, New Start) as well as paid programs including Del Tech and UD's English Language Institute.  Finding a program with a location and schedule that's convenient for you will help you attend regularly and get better results.  We can provide a letter regarding your enrollment which you can give to your employer, if you think your boss will adjust your work schedule so you can attend class.
How many people are in each class? Usually between 8 and 15 students, with as many as 25.
I don't know ANY English!  My friend or relative (or Google Translate) is helping me find a class.  That's fine, but it will be easiest for you to learn if you start classes in September.  The teacher will start with the basics.  If you join a class later in the year, you will have to work VERY hard to catch up.
What kind of certificate or credential do I get if I finish?  We offer a Certificate of Attainment for each student who completes a level according to our placement test.  In order to get a certificate, you MUST take a placement test AND a post test, and earn a score that falls into a higher level than that of your placement test.  Students who do not complete the testing process, or whose performance has not improved sufficiently will not get a Certificate of Attainment. They may earn awards in other categories, including attendance, scholarship, leadership, participation, and tenacity.  Students who complete our highest level should be prepared to continue their education or for entry level work.
